Construction

Opika is undertaking construction in four phases.  We are working with a local contractor who has been supportive of Opika and its mission in the past.  They understand the financial constraints of the project, but are also committed to insuring a quality, sound end-product.

Phase I:
Cost: Approximately 16,000 hryvnia ($2000 US$; 1600 Euros)
  • Well - Underway
  • Driveway - Underway
While there is an existing well, it collapsed long ago.  We are currently cleaning it out and putting in place a concrete support to sustain the sides.  A pump will be installed installed later when enough funds are raised.  The pump must be strong enough to bring water from a depth of about 30 meters because the house is on a large incline higher up from the main part of town.  The neighbor to the West has agreed to allow us to build a driveway as an off-shoot of his own, however we are currently considering the options.

Phase II:
Cost:  Estimated at 40,000 hryvni (5000 US$; 4000 Euros)
  • Roof and Attic - Underway
  • Entranceway - Underway
Many of the interior wall repairs must be done because of the leaky, tin roof.  The entire roof will be replaced, including some structural repairs in one corner and the addition of an attic and insulation.  The main entrance to the house will be recontructed with a small porch area where strollers and coats may be left.

Phase III:
Cost: TBD
  • Windows & Doors
  • Kitchen and Bathroom
  • Sewer

Currently, there is no kitchen and no bathroom.  There is an outdoor toilet near the lower part of the house, but it is structurally unsafe.  From the main entranceway, inhabitants will walk into the kitchen, off of which the bathroom will be constructed, including a bathtub and toilet.  Doors and windows will be installed by professionals.  We will need to purchase 6 doors, 6 windows, a toilet, bathtub, 2 sinks, fixtures, gas stove, countertop and cabinets. We hope to have some items donated for the kitchen.

Phase IV:
Cost:  $
  • Floor
While the floor is not currently unsafe, it will need to be replaced at some point. It is possible that if we are unable to raise enough funds during contstruction, the young mothers may move into one room of the house while we replace the floor in phases later.  However, it would be safer for the entire construction to take place before move-in and that is our plan.

The Future:

Next to the main structure exists a second foundation.  Opika hopes to expand the structure in the future.  The neighbors know of the plan and we are very fortunate that they are supportive of Opika and Opika House.  One of the other reasons we purchased this house was because the foundation for the existing structure is sound enough to accomodate a second floor on the house should one be needed in the future.
